Banking in Quebec: What newcomers need to know

Quebec banking has a unique characteristic: Caisse Desjardins (a credit union network) is the dominant financial institution in many parts of Quebec, not the Big Six. Desjardins has French-first service and is particularly strong in smaller Quebec cities. For newcomers, TD and Scotiabank have French-English bilingual services in Montreal. Bill 96 (2022) requires commercial services to be offered in French — all major banks comply. Arabic-speaking services are growing in Montreal due to the large North African community.
