Healthcare in Alberta: What newcomers need to know

AHCIP (Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan) has a 3-month waiting period. Unlike Ontario's waiting period, you cannot waive the Alberta 3-month wait — plan for private bridge insurance. Registration is automatic when you establish residency — no form to fill out, but coverage only starts after the 3-month mark. AHCIP covers doctor visits, hospital care, and most major medical. Dental and prescriptions are not covered unless you qualify for provincial assistance.
