Healthcare in Quebec: What newcomers need to know

RAMQ (Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec) is Quebec's provincial health insurer — separate from all other provinces. Permanent residents and refugees are covered immediately by RAMQ. Most work permit holders have a 3-month wait. Unique to Quebec: provincial drug insurance is mandatory for all residents. If your employer offers a drug plan, you join that. If not, you must enroll in the RAMQ drug plan. Dental and vision are not covered by RAMQ (except for certain children's programs).
